West Brunswick’s Bubba McCray named Offensive Player of the Year, watch his highlight reel (video)

With nearly 2,000 yards on the ground and 27 touchdowns this season, West Brunswick High School senior running back Anthony ‘Bubba’ McCray ran his way to Mideastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors.

McCray, who helped guide the Trojans to a 9-4 overall record and 4-2 conference mark, finished with 2,171 total yards of offense. West Brunswick rushed for 293 yards per game as the Trojans advanced to the second round of the 3AA playoffs.

McCray had an impressive nine, 100-plus yard rushing games. His biggest output came in West Brunswick’s season opener when his speed and power were on full display with 267 yards rushing in a 43-28 victory against Socastee. He totaled a season-high four trips to the end zone against Ashley. McCray and the Trojans added a statement win on Oct. 14 when the senior finished with 40 rushing attempts, 184 yards and three touchdowns in an impressive 26-14 result over New Hanover.

Below is a complete list of First and Second Team All-Conference picks based on a vote by the leagues seven coaches.

FIRST TEAM

• QB– Josh Jones, Hoggard: Jones guided Hoggard to the third-round of the 4A state playoffs after the Vikings opened the season with a 1-4 mark. The junior quarterback had his biggest output of the season with 358 yards passing in a road win against Durham-Hillside to open the playoffs.

Jones threw for 2,276 yards, completing 58-perecent of his passes in 14 games. He finished with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while rushing 645 yards and eight scores.

• RB– Bubba McCray, West Brunswick

• RB– Rashod Wallace, Hoggard: Wallace was a 1,000 yards rusher for the Vikings. His season-high was a 191 yard performance on 27 carries in a second round playoff win at J.H. Rose.

  

• RB– Imeek Watkins, Laney: Watkins was a four-year starter for Laney and guided the Bucs to its first playoff win since 2011 this fall. He had more than 1,700 yards on the ground and found the end zone 16 times.

• WR– Lamont Howard, New Hanover: Howard had 48 catches for 786 yards and four touchdowns at wide out for the Wildcats.

• WR– Wiz Vaughn, New Hanover: Vaughn accounted for 1,292 total yards of offense this season. He had eight rushing touchdowns and nine touchdowns grabs. Vaughn chewed up 586 rushing yards on 53 attempts to go along with 52 catches for 706 receiving yards.

• TE– Brandon Wehrly, West Brunswick: Wehrly emerged as a receiving threat in a run heavy West Brunswick offense. He finished with 12 catches and 261 yards.

  

• OL– Jarrett Radley, Topsail
• OL– William Willis, Laney
• OL– Tay Vereen, West Brunswick
• OL– Alex Halkias, Hoggard
• OL– Jarvis Ballard, New Hanover

SECOND TEAM

• QB– Blake Walston, New Hanover: Walston took over the starting job midway through his sophomore season after splitting playing time with Francis Meehan early on. He threw for 2,180 yards and 18 touchdowns, while completing 55-percent of his 258 passing attempts.

• RB– Keegan Santos, New Hanover: Santos is headed to Division I Hofstra to play lacrosse next year. He averaged 5.45 per carry on the football field this season, with 589 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

• RB– Noah LaValle, Topsail: LaValle was the newcomer of the year after taking over at running back early on for Topsail. The freshman had 1,382 yards rushing and 13 total touchdowns in his rookie season. Topsail averaged 229 yards on the ground per game. He had a season-high 240 yards and three scores against Croatan on Sept. 9.

  

• WR– Collin Hairr, Hoggard: Hairr was a key component in the Hoggard passing attack. If he didn’t miss a month of season due to a broken collarbone, Hairr likely would have been a first-team pick. He saw action in nine games. He had 38 receptions for 705 yards and nine touchdowns. Hairr had a season-high seven catches, 130 yards and two touchdowns in his final high school game, a 49-27 defeat against Scotland County in the third round of the 4A playoffs.

• WR– Tre Houser, Hoggard: Houser played a big role in Hairr’s absence during the regular season. He can catch it, run it and showcased his talent in the return game. Houser finished with 1,028 all-purpose yards.

• TE– Patrick Morrison, Hoggard: Morrison had 18 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns. He had a one yard scoring reception against Scotland County and a season long 49 yard catch against Seventy-First. Morrison also played a big part in the run game, helping the offensive line up front as the Vikings rushed for 210 yards per game.
