Hoggard football surging into December; New Hanover, Laney coaches sit down one last time on Sports Round Table (video)

WILMINGTON — After round two of the state playoffs there is one local high school team still standing following the Hoggard Vikings sixth consecutive victory, 65-41, in Greenville against J.H. Rose.

Led by Tony Allen and his five touchdowns, Hoggard chewed up over 400 yards on the ground. This week’s edition of ‘Sports Round Table’ showcases the Vikings road win, with an interview featuring Head Coach Craig Underwood along with game highlights.

After going to the air often in the opening round of the 4A bracket at Durham-Hillside, the Rampants put its defensive efforts in trying to stop Hoggard’s air attack, which led to big holes and a good push up-front by the Vikings’ offensive line.

Allen and Rashod Wallace contributed in the run game, while Collin Hairr continues to step up at wide-out. Quarterback Josh Jones put together another complete performance under center, while the Vikings defense did enough early in the game to stymie a well-rounded J.H. Rose offense.

Sports Round Table airs during the high school football and basketball seasons at 8 p.m. Wednesdays on Time Warner Cable Channel 5 and Charter Cable Channel 91. The New Hanover County Schools produced television show is the longest running broadcast of its kind in the area.

Unfortunately, New Hanover and Laney had their playoff runs come to close last Friday in season ending setbacks against Cardinal Gibbons and Wake Forest, respectively.

Penalties, missed tackles and the inability to execute in the red zone hampered New Hanover in a 31-13 defeat. The Bucs carried a 6-0 lead into the second half, but could not hold on in a defensive grudge match against the top seed in the 4AA bracket.

Coach Earl Smith and Coach Aashad Yeoman sat down for one final interview on the show to recognize seniors on the team, go over game footage and highlight expectations moving into next season.
