Heading into the final date on the regular season schedule, high school football teams in New Hanover County are looking to fine tune some things moving into postseason play. The latest edition of Sports Round Table airs at 8 p.m. on Wednesday on Time Warner Cable Channel 5 and Charter Cable Channel 191.
This week, New Hanover inside linebackers Coach John Fuller stop by the New Hanover County Television studios to go over highlights from the Wildcats 46-17 victory over Topsail. Fuller played for current Head Coach Earl Smith during the 1980’s at Raleigh-Millbrook. He was brought on as an assistant to Smith’s staff during his first sting at New Hanover in the early 2000’s and hung with the Wildcats until Smith returned in 2015.
Fuller’s son, Caleb Fuller, also plays football at Appalachian State. He talked about the relationship with Coach Smith, his son’s college career and the Wildcats push for a Mideastern Conference Championship.
The Wildcats were firing on all cylinders last week, with over 500 yards of total offense and two defensive touchdowns.
The biggest win of the week came in Shallotte as Laney upended West Brunswick, 34-14. Imeek Watkins rushed for over 100 yards and three touchdowns and we also saw the emergence of sophomore Jason Billingslea. He made two trips across the goal line and the Bucs defense forced three turnovers.
Collin Hairr is back to full strength and the senior wide out had a career day for the Hoggard Vikings in a 34-6 victory against Ashley. Hairr caught four touchdown passes from junior quarterback Josh Jones. Sophomore Isaiah Kemp also recorded an interception for the second consecutive game to highlights Hoggard’s defensive effort.
