WILMINGTON — The top two sides inside the Mideastern Conference clashed at Legion Stadium on Thursday night and, after 100 minutes of soccer, neither team made leeway in the search for a league title.
Ashley carried a one score advantage until the final 10 seconds of regulation when New Hanover junior midfielder Paul Horning took advantage of a free kick opportunity at the top of the 18-yard line and buried the equalizer as both teams were held scoreless during the two 10-minute overtime periods for a 1-1 draw.

The Wildcats extended its unbeaten streak to nine straight, improving to 8-1-1 in the division and 14-3-1 overall. Ashley last suffered defeat against New Hanover in a 1-0 setback nearly one month ago, running off five consecutive wins in addition to Thursday’s tie, which put the Screaming Eagles at 9-1-1 in conference and 11-3-2 on the year.
After a back-and-forth first half, Dylan Daughtridge put the garnet and gold on the board after Dom Toome was brought down in the penalty area in the 26th minute. The sophomore slotted home the first goal of the match from the spot to give Ashley a 1-0 lead.

Goalkeepers Roman Lewis and Eaven Alvarez were tested at times throughout the night, but couldn’t do much on the pair of free kick chances, which led to the only tallies of the match.
