Coastal Christian soccer finishes regular season on high note; Local soccer, volleyball scoreboard

Hoggard 4   Laney 1

The Vikings snapped a three-game skid with a 4-1 win against Laney on Thursday to remain one game behind Ashley and New Hanover in the division standings. Hoggard moved to 4-2 in conference and 8-5 on the year.

Laney dropped to 4-4 in league play and 8-6-2 overall. Hoggard returns to the pitch for three games in four days next week. The Bucs take on New Hanover on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Coastal Christian 4     Fayetteville Academy 0

Emotions were running high for the Coastal Christian soccer team during senior day on campus Thursday afternoon and the Centurions continued a successful run this season with a 4-0 shutout against Fayetteville Academy.

The result was the programs first ever win over Fayetteville Academy, improving Coastal Christians overall record to 19-2-1 overall and likely giving the Centurions a top-seed in the upcoming state playoffs.

Tommy Murphy put the home side on the scoring sheet 22 minutes into the first half on an assist from Matt Ward. Ward sent in a corner kick towards the middle of the penalty area as Murphy took two touches and into the back of the net.

Ward added to the advantage just before half time from the penalty spot, while Douglas McKinney and Walker Henderson added scores within three minutes of each other late in the match to seal the win.

New Hanover 6      West Brunswick 0

The Wildcats extended their winning streak to seven straight on Thursday night after a 6-0 win against West Brunswick in Shallotte.

Ross Hibbert tallied twice for New Hanover, while Paul Horning, Hamilton Willis, Carson Powell and Nick Granda added to the scoring sheet.

New Hanover moved to 7-1 in league play, tied with Ashley for first-place in conference and 13-3 overall. The Wildcats begin a key stretch over the next week beginning against Laney on Tuesday, Oct. 17. New Hanover then faces Ashley (Oct. 20) and Hoggard (Oct. 25).

Ashley 5    South Brunswick 0

Coming off a key result at Laney earlier this week, the Ashley soccer team continued its push to a conference championship following an impressive result against South Brunswick.

Wally Avila, Justin Balderson and Dylan Daughtridge scored in the first-half, guiding the Screaming Eagles to its fourth consecutive win. Ashley remains tied with New Hanover for top spot in league play with an 8-1 mark in conference and 10-3-1 overall record.

The Screaming Eagles have a date with West Brunswick on Tuesday, Oct. 17 before facing off against New Hanover on Thursday, Oct. 20.

 

Volleyball

Hoggard 3      Laney 0

(25-17, 25-23, 25-18)

Hoggard cruised to its fourth straight undefeated regular season in conference play following a 3-0 sweep over Laney on Thursday. The Vikings earned a top seed in next week’s Mideastern Conference Tournament and first-round bye.
