New Hanover 2 Hoggard 1
New Hanover has been battle tested coming off a tough loss to end the season at last year’s 4A East Regional. Now, down in the division early this fall following a setback to Laney a few weeks ago, the Wildcats faced their next big challenge and tightened the division race with a late goal in a 2-1 result on Shipyard Boulevard.
With the win, New Hanover gives each of the four Wilmington schools at least one loss in the division moving towards the second half of conference play. The Wildcats (3-1, 9-3) are now winners of three straight, while Hoggard fell to 3-1 in the division and 7-3 overall.
Both teams were eager to make something happen with their play throughout the final 40 minutes as the drama built in Scott Braswell Stadium. The Vikings gained early momentum after the break, but with regulation winding down freshman Tenneyson Wnek found himself in position to put away the game winner and volleyed home a long throw in for his second career goal to give New Hanover the key result.
Hoggard’s quick strike attack put Andrew Robinson on the scoring sheet just nine minutes into the match to give the home side an early boost until New Hanover started to level play moving through the opening half. A corner kick in the late stages of the first period set up the ensuing service, which created a loose ball opportunity inside the penalty area and Moss Lewis tallied the equalizer to make the score 1-1 at break. Roman Lewis also played a key role in net as the senior goal keeper made six saves.
Coming off an impressive week with wins over Ashley (4-1, 6-3-1) and Hoggard (3-1, 7-3), the Wildcats take a share of the division lead into a three game five-day stretch beginning with South Brunswick and Topsail before tussling with Laney (3-2, 7-4-2) at Legion Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 6. Hoggard looks to bounce back against a quality Ashley side on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
Laney 5 South Brunswick 1
The Bucs grabbed a three-goal lead before halftime and netted scores twice more en route to a 5-1 win at home over South Brunswick.
“I was very pleased with our effort and we’re starting to string together quality performances,” said Laney Coach Jamie Noble.”This is the time of year when you want to start figuring it out. It should be interested to see how things play out in the conference moving forward.”
Tristan Nelson got things going in the 19th minute off an assist from Jackson Young. Finn Kautz, Hunter Garris, Simon Daughtry, Devon Ammons and Logan Gray all found the back of the net. Nelson, Garris and Daughtry each had an assist for the Bucs, who moved to 3-2 in conference and 7-4-2 overall.
Topsail 2 West Brunswick 1
Josh Madole tallied for Topsail in the opening half and Dawson Asbury notched the winner to give the Pirates a 2-1 win against West Brunswick. Jorge Lopez had three saves for Topsail.
Coastal Christian 2 Southeastern Home School 1
David Gore put home a rebound attempt in the opening 10 minutes of the match and Coastal Christian scored on an own goal en route to a 2-1 victory on Thursday.

Hoggard 3 New Hanover 1

Hoggard dropped the opening set and needed a pair of close wins to grab a two-games-to-one lead before extinguishing New Hanover 25-19 to close the match in a four set winner on Thursday. The Vikings maintain a firm grip atop the conference following the result against heading into a good test over the next 10 days with upcoming matches against Wilmington Christian, Erwin and D.H. Conley . The Vikings are 8-0 in conference and 12-5 overall.
