Coastal Centurion soccer weathers Cape Fear Academy Hurricanes (photos/video)

WILMINGTON  — Two crosstown foes squared off on the synthetic turf along South College Road across from Cape Fear Academy on Friday afternoon and the Coastal Christian Centurions found the back of the net just five minutes into the match en route to a 7-1 result.

Coastal Christian controlled possession and tempo right from the opening whistle. The Centurions earned the game’s first corner kick and soon after the visitors in red and black found the scoring sheet. After the Hurricanes were unable to clear the service, miscommunication along the Cape Fear Academy back line allowed Tommy Murphy to slip inside the penalty box and unleash a quick strike to make it 1-0 in the fifth minute.

Zach Tomonuas had the Hurricanes best scoring chance during the first half, but an ambitious attempt slid across frame and wide left. The missed opportunity allowed Coastal Christian to grab a two goal advantage late in the opening period when Centurion standout Douglas McKinney recorded his 100th career tally in the 29th minute. Matt Ward and Walker Henderson assisted the early goals for Coastal Christian.

Cape Fear Academy was able to close the deficit three minutes after the break before Murphy found Henderson 60 seconds later to increase the cushion, 3-1. Ward and Tafari Croom also found the scoring sheet, while Henderson and McKinney tallied for a second time as Coastal Christian used a flurry of goals midway through the second half to finish off the positive result.

Coastal Christian improved to 12-2-1 overall and took possession of second place inside the Coastal Rivers Conference. Meanwhile, Cape Fear Academy dropped its second match in as many days, falling to 5-2 in conference and 11-5 on the year.
