Hoggard, Coastal Christian, Cape Fear Academy soccer cruise; Topsail, Hoggard, Laney volleyball grab league wins

Laney 2  Swansboro 2 

After a scoreless first half the Laney soccer team used two goals after the break by Tristan Nelson to grab the advantage, but a feisty Swansboro squad found the scoring sheet and notched the equalizer with under four minutes to go to finish level 2-2 on Thursday night.

Simon Daughtry sent in a service for a Nelson header early in the second half to  put the home side in front and David Dailey assisted his classmate minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Up next for the Bucs is a rematch from last year’s 4A East Regional as Laney opens conference play against New Hanover on  Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Hoggard 5   Jack Britt 0

Senior captain Eric Elsaesser finished a header in the first half to give Hoggard a one goal advantage and the Vikings added to their cushion late in a 5-o shutout at Scott Braswell Stadium.

Cesar Cruz tallied twice, while Andrew Robinson and Luke Benecki each found the back of the net.

Hoggard moved to 5-1 overall and remain at 1-0 in conference.

Cape Fear Academy 9   Harrells Christian 0

Cape Fear Academy continued its domination over conference opponents following a 9-nil result against Harrells Christian. Nine different players found the scoring sheet for the Hurricanes, who improved to 2-0 in league play and 8-2 overall.

Coastal Christian  2        Ravenscroft 2    (OT) 

Coastal Christian opened a weekend tournament with a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 draw through a pair of overtimes against Ravenscroft.

Douglas McKinney and Walker Henderson both found the back of the net in the opening half as Coastal Christian grabbed a 2-0 lead at the break before Ravenscroft found the equalizer in the 77th minute to force the extra session.

McKinney put the Centurions on the board off an assist from Hunter Mintz just six minutes into the match and Henderson tallied from the penalty spot midway through the first period.

Volleyball

Hoggard 3   Ashley 2

Hoggard was pushed to the limit at Ashley on Thursday night, but the Vikings prevailed in the fifth set, 16-14, to remain unbeaten in league play this season. Madie Schider recorded 16 digs for Hoggard, while Kirby Smith smashed 16 kills. Samantha Shuffler and Camille Whitlock combined for 25 assists at setter.

Topsail 3   New Hanover 2

After jumping out to a two games-to-none cushion, Topsail held off a momentum swing as the Pirates extinguished New Hanover 15-13 in the decisive fifth to grab a 3-2 win in Hampstead.

Victoria Elder had 10 kills on the attack for Topsail, while Kaylee Kyle recorded 18 assists. Angelica Biele and Selena Biele also combined for 21 kills and 26 digs in the all-around effort.

Topsail picked up back-to-back wins this week to move to 2-2 in conference and 6-3 overall. New Hanover dropped its second match in three days falling to 1-2 in the division and 5-2 on the year.

The Bucs continued its run through the early season conference schedule with a straight set 3-0 sweep against West Brunswick in Shallotte.

Anna Morgan paced the attack with 12 kills and served three aces. Meredith Pooley played solid defense with 19 digs and Alex Erling proved vital in the passing game with 24 assists.

Laney improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Kaylee Scoggins had 16 kills and 20 digs, while Aliah Johnson recorded 23 assists to pace North Brunswick in a 3-2 victory against South Brunswick.
