While Ashley (2-0) and New Hanover (1-2) are off on Friday, Sept. 9, Coaches Jeff Turner and Earl Smith are using the extra practice time to fine tune some things heading in a pair of road games on Sept. 16.
Ashley is off to its first 2-0 start since 2003, while New Hanover is looking to rebound from back-to-back losses. Bradley Plyler (Ashley) and Wiz Vaughn (New Hanover) have six touchdowns each this season.
On Shipyard Boulevard, Coach Craig Underwood and the Hoggard Vikings (1-2) are working on correctable mistakes in special teams and on the defensive side of the football. The Hoggard offense has been consistent between the 20’s and looking to improve the unit’s conversion rate inside the red zone. Tony Allen and Rashod Wallace have helped the Vikings rush for nearly 200 yards per game.
Laney (1-2) is coming off a 22-0 setback against Lee County in a game that finished on Labor Day. The Bucs are led by a handful of players on defense, with Cayman Csezak and Tyler Moore at linebacker to go along with pass rushers Ryan Daborowski and Travone McGhee. Defensive lineman Dionte Hicks has also shown potential in the stopping the run. Laney needs to keep possession on offense to give its defense a breather as each of their losses this season have come when the Bucs had trouble sustaining drives and scoring points.
