Laney 14 J.H. Rose 13
Sophomore quarterback Sherod Sidbury scored the game-winning touchdown with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter and the Laney defense posted a shutout after the break as the Bucs pulled out a 14-13 come from behind victory on the road.
Laney overcame two turnovers in the first half after controlling the clock with their newly installed option offense and closed the deficit. An interception by the Rampants gave J.H Rose possession in Bucs’ territory and used a 12 yard touchdown from Ryan Goodwin to Mydreon Vines to grab a 7-0 lead late in the opening period.
Goodwin also hit Vines on a 40 yard pass just before halftime to make it a 13-0 cushion.
A long drive late in the third quarter put Laney on the board and after the Bucs’ defense forced a turnover on downs with under seven minutes to play in the game, Sidbury took a quarterback keeper across the goal line for the score.
After a disappointing effort in the second half during Laney’s week one setback, the bounce back win moves the Bucs’ to 1-1 overall. Laney opens a three-game home stand against Lee County on Friday, Sept. 2.

Myrtle Beach 34 New Hanover 13
New Hanver junior Wiz Vaughn added to his touchdown total with a pair of trips to the end zone on Friday night, but a high-powered Myrtle Beach offense was unmatched as the Seahawks handed the Wildcats a 34-13 setback.
Trailing by seven after Jayce Allen took the opening kickoff 85 yards to put Myrtle Beach on the board, Francis Meehan connected on a 15 yard touchdown pass to Vaughn to tie the game midway the first quarter.
Keyonte Sessions responded with back-to-back touchdowns to give Myrtle Beach control of the ball game before quarterback Lawson Cribb connected on a 30 yard strike just before the half to make it 28-7 at the half.
Jaquan Chestnut pulled in a 14 yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter from Cribb to put the game in check as Vaughn returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for New Hanover.
The Wildcats dropped to 1-1 overall and face Havelock on Friday, Sept. 2.

West Brunswick 28 South Columbus 15
The Trojans erased an early first quarter deficit and scored 28 straight points as West Brunswick rolled past South Columbus 28-15 in Tabor City on Friday night.
Bubba McCray rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight game, but nine different rushers touched the ball in the Trojans’ ground attack. McCray scored his fourth touchdown of the year to tie the game seven-all with 5:42 left in the first half and Maliek King put the Trojans in front for good midway through the third quarter.
King raced passed the goal line for his second touchdown of the night with 10:57 left in the game and Taye Vereen made a big defensive play on the ensuing possession to set up a 10 yard score by Bryson Allen.
West Brunswick moved to 2-0 overall heading and continue a two-game road swing at North Myrtle Beach on Friday, Sept. 2.
Socastee (S.C.) 44 North Brunswick 40
North Brunswick let a 10-point fourth quarter lead slip away on the road as Socastee earned a 44-40 triumph on Friday night.
The back-and-forth affair had the Scorpions tie the game 30-30 with eight minutes to play in the third quarter when Dakota Desfonds scored a 13 yard touchdown. JC Smith had 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five carries in the opening 24 minutes for North Brunswick, but Socastee carried a 23-22 edge into the second half.
Trailing by seven in the first quarter, North Brunswick used just three plays to tie the game on their first possession before Socastee answered late in the opening period to grab a 14-7 lead. Smith responded with a 68-yard trip to the end zone to keep it tied after 12 minutes of action.
North Brunswick fell to 1-1 overall and gets the week off before hosting South Brunswick on Friday, Sept. 9.
Topsail 64 Pender 21
After letting a fourth quarter lead get away from the Pirates in week one, the Topsail football team used contributions from a variety of players en route to a 64-21 win at Pender.
Hayden Walsh finished with three total touchdowns, including a blocked punt return to give the Pirates a 38-7 cushion late in the opening quarter. Turnovers and special teams plagued Pender early on as Collin Phillips and Cole Schiefelbein each had scores off miscues by the Patriots. Noah Lavalle also added a punt return for a touchdown in the Topsail win.
The Pirates are now 1-1 overall and play at Dixon on Friday, September 2.
