The Historic Wilmington Foundation is once again looking for volunteers for its Tar Heels Go Walking program, a partnership with New Hanover County Schools.
Now in its eighth year, the program helps educate students, teachers and parents about the history, architecture and culture of the city. According to the HWF, more than 17,500 students, 350 teachers and 1100 parents have experienced a Tar Heels Go Walking tour over the years. Due to the program’s popularity and growth, more volunteer tour guides are needed.
“Because of the children’s thirst for knowledge, more tour guides are needed to meet the demand,” the HWF said in a release. “Help pass down the heritage of this great city to the next generation.”
Training sessions for volunteers will begin in early August. The 14 hours of training will include three classroom sessions, a practice tour and one tour where new trainees will shadow a more experienced guide.
Tours will run from early September to mid-December, and each guide is encouraged to lead at least two to three tours. They take place from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on every weekday except for teacher workdays and testing days.
