Music and mindfulness will meet this month when musician Michael Franti brings yoga back to the Battleship.
98.3 The Penguin and HUKA Entertainment have just announced Franti will once again team up with yogini Seane Corn for a retreat from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, July 18, on the ship ahead of his concert with Spearhead at Greenfield Lake Ampitheater.
The pair was first aboard the Port City’s historic World War II vessel two years ago for the Soulshine Festival. Part yoga retreat, part concert, the 2014 event featured live music from Franti and Spearhead, along with performances by reggae band SOJA, poppy folkster Brett Dennen and singer/songwriter Trevor Hall.
This time around Franti, an avid yogi in his own right, and practitioner Corn will reunite on the Battleship with a particular purpose. According to HUKA, the event will put a renewed focus on “not just tolerance, but acceptance” in an attempt to “exercise positivity in the wake of recent discriminatory policies and headlines in the state.”
Proceeds from the yoga and music session will benefit the Human Rights Campaign and Equality NC, two civil liberties and LGBT advocacy organizations currently leading the fight against House Bill 2. All funds raised will be matched by The Rex Foundation, a non-profit founded by members and family of the Grateful Dead. The foundation supports, among other causes, a healthy environment, individuality in the arts, those living in poverty, indigenous people and their cultures and education of all ages. Donations may also be made to the three groups by clicking the links above.
Tickets to the pre-concert yoga retreat with Franti and Corn are $35 in advance and are now on sale through HUKA Entertainment’s website. Admission is $40 the day of the event.
