Local golfers tee off at 56th North Carolina Amateur Championship

The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) will conduct the 56th North Carolina Amateur Championship on the Lakes-Foothills routing of the Governors Club in Chapel Hill from June 16-19.

Seven golfers with ties to the Wilmington area will be among the 147-player field, while three of the top five finishers from last year will return to vie for the championship.

Local individuals to follow during the three-day, 72-hole stroke play event are Wilmington Christian Academy products Blake Taylor, Joey Funderburg and Austin Inman.

Taylor punched a ticket to the amateur championship by claiming top spot on the leader board at Pine Valley Country Club in Wilmington last month. The East Carolina signee posted a six-under, 66, during the one-day qualifier.

Funderburg recently placed third at the CGA Creed Boys Invitational at Camden Country Club in Camden, South Carolina during the Memorial Day weekend. He posted a final-round, two-over 72, closing the 36-hole four shots back from the leader.

Inman is a member of the UNCW golf team. He appeared in six events for Liberty University before transferring after his freshman season. He was also a two-time state champion for Wilmington Christian.

This is the fifth CGA championship hosted by the Governors Club. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course has hosted U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open qualifiers in recent years.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering nine and 18-hole updates.

After 36 holes, there will be a cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 16, 2016, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club that is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.
