Diamond Hawks destined for South Carolina regional, will face Duke in opener

The field of 64 teams competing for the 2016 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced on Monday by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

The top eight national seeds are Florida (47-13), Louisville (47-12), Miami [FL] (45-11), Texas A&M (45-14), Texas Tech (41-16), Mississippi State (41-16-1), Clemson (42-18) and LSU (42-18).

The Atlantic Coast Conference set a conference record and tied the all-time mark of having 10 teams in the championship field.

UNCW landed an at-large bid and joined William & Mary as the two representatives out of the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Seahawks are heading to Columbia, South Carolina with Duke and Atlantic 10 Champion Rhode Island, joining the host Gamecocks in one of 16 regionals across the country. The regionals are scheduled to be held from Friday, June 3, to Monday, June 6 (if necessary).

UNCW will be the two-seed and play Duke in the first game of the Columbia Regional on Friday at 1 p.m. The Seahawks will be making their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance, all since 2003.

The Seahawks carry a 39-17 record into the regional, while the Blue Devils are 33-22 on the season. The two teams have not met since 2006 and UNCW holds a 22-11 lead in the all-time series.

All games in the regional will be streamed on the ESPN 3 platform and all UNCW games will be audio streamed on the Seahawk Digital Network.
