Baseball: UNCW dominates in three-game sweep over Pride

Brian Mims had four hits and Casey Golden knocked in four runs as UNCW finished off a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep of Hofstra with an 18-4 win at Brooks Field on Sunday.

UNCW pushed its school-record and nation-leading home winning streak to 17 games, while improving to 31-10 overall and 11-2 in the league.

Mims, who raised his batting average to .382, finished the afternoon going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two driven in. Golden, meanwhile, singled in two runs in the first inning and doubled in two more.

The Seahawks jumped on the Pride with three runs in the first inning, but it was an eight-run rally in the third that put the game away. Thirteen hitters made their way to the play in the inning with Robbie Thorburn and Zach Canada plating runs on a pair of extra base hits. .

UNCW went 11-for-24 with runners in scoring position. Cory Gantz limited Hofstra to just two hits with two outs as the Seahawks improved to 25-2 when hitting a home run. UNCW hit .407 on the weekend, while Nick Feight moved into second on UNCW’s single season RBI list with 74 following a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning

Robbie Thorburn and Kennard McDowell fueled the Seahawks from the bottom of the order going 3-for-4 and 2-for-5, respectively. Thorburn scored four runs and McDowell scored three runs and plated three, including two on his fourth homer of the season.

Steven Linkous, who was third in the conference with a .392 batting average entering the game, collected three hits to move into a tie for the league-lead with a .398 average.

The Seahawks continue conference play on May 6 when they host the College of Charleston at 6 p.m.
