The Wilmington Family YMCA is helping children and adults get ready for some fun in the water this summer by offering free water safety classes this week.

The YMCA is hosting its “Swim for Life” free water safety and swim program to adults and children, ages five and older, who could not normally afford swim lessons, according to YMCA Spokesman Tom Lamont. The classes will be offered now until Thursday, March 31, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., each day. The program is offered at the four-lane pool located at 2710 Market St.

The classes are divided into two parts – swim instruction and safety, Lamont said. Participants will receive specific instruction from an instructor tailored to their own swim level. Lessens will also instruct swimmers on how to assist a struggling swimmer without jeopardizing their own safety, as well as how to help others in the water and show them basic skills.

The Swim for Life program at the YMCA was made possible through a contribution of the late Channing Daniel, a long-time member of the Wilmington Family YMCA.
