Pirates let lead slip away, fall in extras to Utah at USA Baseball Complex

With the score tied at three after Bingham High School (South Jordan, Utah) erased a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh, the Miners scratched one across in the top of the ninth to pull off the 4-3 comeback victory against Topsail on day three of the National High School Baseball Invitational in Cary.

Down to their final three outs, Bingham rallied to force extra innings and used five different pitchers to earn the result. Coming off a complete game effort the day prior by Payton Rice, Pirates starter Aiden Smith surrendered one run on three hits, with two walks and one strikeout in six innings work in the no decision.

Topsail took an early lead and carried a 3-1 advantage into the seventh, but were unable to add necessary insurance throughout the contest as the Pirates left 15 runners on base.

Cameron Kimrey went 2-for-4 at the bottom of the order, while Sam Hall doubled for the second straight game and finished with two runs scored.  Josh Madole also added two hits.

Topsail got on the board in the second on an RBI single by Kimrey. Aaron Beach was hit by a pitch with one out in the frame and moved into scoring position after a balk was called on Bingham starter Jayden Anderson.  He plated the game’s first run on the single by Kimrey, but the Miners were able to get out of the jam on a double play ball.

The Pirates made it a two-run lead in the fourth after Chase Riker hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Hall. The Clemson commit reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole second and advanced to third on Madole’s first base hit of the ball game.

Bingham pulled to within one in the sixth, but Colby Emmertz  put the ball in play with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the inning, forcing a Miners error to gain a 3-1 advantage. The Miners scored two runs on two hits, with one walk in the seventh to set up the dramatic finish.

Topsail looks to close the national invite on a high note in their final day of the National High School Baseball Invitational on Saturday. Game time and opponent are yet to be determined.
