Weekend baseball, soccer scoreboard: Topsail, New Hanover, Laney and Ashley all get wins

Baseball

Topsail 7    Garner 1

Sam Hall, Chase Riker, Tyler Ording and Jake Luchansky all had multi-hit games as the Topsail baseball team went on the road this weekend and earned a 7-1 victory at Garner on Saturday.

The Pirates plated four runs in the second to grab the early lead. Riker led off the frame with a base hit and Aidan Smith smacked a double to put runners in scoring position with nobody out. Luchansky singled home Riker, while Smith stole home. Luchansky eventually scored on a wild pitch and Hall capped the rally with an RBI base knock.

Hall and Riker both went 3-for-4 as Topsail had 12 hits in the contest. Luchansky added two hits and two runs scored, while Aaron Beach had two RBI’s in the lead off spot.

Payton Rice tossed a shutout on the mound, allowing no runs and three hits over five innings. He finished with one walk and four strikeouts. Alex Holland gave up one run in relief, but battled out of the sixth and Johnny Tartaglione induced a 3-6-1 double play to close out the ball game.

With a four-run lead, Topsail added one in the third and two more in the fifth. Riker recorded his second double of the game when the Barton College commit hit a 3-1 pitch to start the fifth. He later scored on a fielder’s choice and Cam Kimery tacked on the game’s final run to cap the impressive road win.

North Myrtle Beach 9    Laney 1

Soccer

Laney 6   Fayetteville Academy 0

Coming off their first setback of the season the day prior, Laney filled the scoring sheet in a 6-0 shutout against Fayetteville Academy on Saturday. Anna Porcelli recorded a hat trick and Baley Edwards tallied twice. Haley Shand added one goal and one assist.

Hoggard 3   Pinecrest 3

Siara Southerland scored twice and Chloe Whitaker added one goal as Hoggard tied Pinecrest 3-3 on Saturday afternoon

New Hanover 2   T.C. Williams 1

Sally Sloan and Caroline Herring notched scores for the New Hanover Wildcats in a 2-1 win against T.C. Williams on Saturday.  Joanie Richardson and Taylor Dodd picked up an assist, while Flanney Hutko and Emily Leister combined for five saves.

 Ashley 6    Covenant Day 0

The Screaming Eagles played in their final non-conference tuneup on Saturday and used three goals by Carly Higgins to post a 6-0 result against Covenant Day School. Lindsey Williams and Morgan Carpenter both found the back of the net.

Topsail 5   Jack Britt 2

Topsail defeated Jack Britt 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Brittany Willis Soccer Showcase in Wilson.  Carsyn Malpass had three goals, while Carmen Pyrtle and Jamie Keisman each found the back of the net.  Hayley Childress had 12 saves in goal.
