High school basketball takes center stage across the Wilmington area during holiday break as Cape Fear Academy hosts its 4th Annual Basketball Challenge Dec. 29-Jan. 2.
This four-day challenge includes eight schools and 16 teams. There will be six games played each day, with an off day scheduled for Friday, Jan. 1.
“All the schools in the challenge have been great,” said Cape Fear Academy Athletics Director Chris Meehl. “We’ve enjoyed the competition between schools, but we’ve also enjoyed the relationships with each school. The coaches, athletic directors and fans at each school have been fantastic. It makes for a fun four days.”
Boys and girls teams from South Brunswick, West Brunswick and Topsail High Schools will represent the 3A portion of the split Mideastern Conference. Cape Fear Academy is joined by fellow league members Coastal Christian and Harrells Christian. New to the tournament this year will be Trask High School and Wilmington Christian Academy.
“Rodney Orr at Trask and Craig Tucker at WCA both expressed interest in the tournament so we decided to bring them on this season,” Meehl added. “They’re both great guys and they run really good programs. We have good relationships with both schools and it was a natural fit to be included.”
All games will be played in the main gym along South College Road on the campus of CFA. Games on Tuesday (Dec. 29) and Wednesday (Dec. 30) will tip off at 1 p.m., while the action gets underway at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 31) and Saturday (Jan. 2).
The cost is $5 per adult and $2 per student each day; monies received will go directly to pay for officials since there’s no tournament fee for the 16 teams competing.
