Find some one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts–or just some pieces to fill your empty walls–at Art for the Masses this weekend.
A variety of canvas creations, sculpted works and handcrafted pieces will be on display–and for sale at affordable prices–during the annual event this Saturday at UNC-Wilmington.
The brainchild of local photographer Matt Dols, Art for the Masses first launched in 2002 in the former Roudabush building in downtown Wilmington. From the onset, the goal has been to showcase the talents of emerging artists at a price mainstream art aficionados can afford.
This popular sale was put on hold for a couple of years after its sponsor, nonprofit organization Creative Wilmington, disbanded in 2010.
But UNCW offered Art for the Masses a permanent home in 2012, effectively continuing the tradition of making art accessible to all. The program is coordinated through Campus Life Arts and Programs and the Department of Art and Art History.
Saturday’s Art for the Masses, held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the university’s Burney and Warwick centers, features more than 100 artists selling pieces for $250 or less. Participating artists retain 100 percent of proceeds from their sales.
Admission is free but donations are requested at the door to help fund public arts projects at UNCW. Food will be available for purchase in the Warwick Center.

Music
Flytrap Brewing presents a free live show from Tyler McKaig and at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday). 2 Bros. Coastal Cuisine will serve up Mexican street food from 7 to 10. Husband wife duo Ozzie and Molly Darden performs at 8 p.m. Friday, with Pepe’s Taco Truck onsite from 7 to 11. On Saturday, L Shape Lot Duo goes on at 8, and Catch the Food Truck will serve local street food from 7 to 9.
Back by popular demand, singer, songwriter and cellist Shana Tucker returns to Thalian Hall for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Describing her music as “ChamberSoul,” Tucker plays a mix of acoustic pop, soulful, jazz and contemporary folk. Tickets are $20-$36.
Legendary North Carolina rockabilly group Southern Culture on the Skids takes the stage at Ziggy’s By The Sea Saturday. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the concert begins at 9. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show.
Theater/Comedy
UNC-Wilmington’s theater department presents the radical Jacobean-period play, “Tis’ Pity She’s a Whore,” at 8 p.m. tonight and Friday on the Cultural Arts Building’s main stage. Tickets are $15 ($12 for seniors; $6 for students).
TheatreNOW dinner theater’s “A Trailer Park Christmas” runs at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Doors open at 6 p.m. The holiday-themed comedy follows the residents of Whispering Pines Trailer Park and their open-latch Christmas gathering. Tickets are $22-$40.
Comedian Dov Davidoff brings his stand-up to Dead Crow Comedy Room this weekend. Davidoff has been named one of Variety’s “Top 10 to Watch.” He will perform at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $19-$24.
Film
Detour Deli and Café hosts Film Noir Thursdays from 8 to 10 p.m. each week. Tonight’s film is the 1946 classic, “Gilda,” starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford. Admission is free.
