Hoggard High School alum Terry Caldwell made his first start of the season for the nationally ranked Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon and the junior transfer from Wilmington had a team-high five tackles, with one tackle for loss and one sack.
No. 13 Ole Miss routed New Mexico State 52-3 in front of 60,154 fans for homecoming at Vaught-Hemingway stadium. Caldwell will continue to get more playing time at the middle linebacker position in place of the injured C.J. Johnson, who will miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
East Carolina fell short in a high scoring affair against BYU in Provo, Utah as the Pirates fell 45-38 in game featuring more than 1,000 total yards of offense. Former New Hanover High School standout Trevon Brown had season highs in both catches (6) and receiving yards (84) and snared a touchdown pass for the third consecutive game, a one-yarder from Blake Kemp just before halftime.
In three games this season, the sophomore wide out has 14 receptions for 213 yards and three scores. He’s averaging 71 yards receiving per game and has a 47-yard grab for his season long.
In the NCAA Division II ranks, Catawba battled the elements for a third straight week and won 10-3 over host Limestone on a sloppy tract in Gaffney, South Carolina on Saturday night. The Catawba Indians improve to 4-2 overall and quarterback Mike Sheehan rushed for 92 yards on 22 carries. Through six games this season, the Laney graduate has 364 yards on the ground, with a 52 percent completion percentage, 584 yards passing and five total touchdowns.
Nationally ranked Wingate suffered its first setback of the year, falling 26-17 to Tusculum on Saturday. Ian Bergmann (Laney) had one pass break up for the Bulldogs, who fell to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference.
North Carolina A&T surrendered just 167 yards of offense to Norfolk State in a 27-3 win over the Spartans. Freshman Julius Reynolds (Hoggard) had a team-high seven tackles, with one sack for an eight-yard loss. The Aggies improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC. Reynolds is fifth on the team in total tackles and has two sacks on the year.
Presbyterian (1-5, 0-1 Big South) put together its most complete performance of the season, but fell short against the No. 1 ranked FCS team in the nation in a 24-17 setback to Coastal Carolina. Frank Keller (Ashley) continues to start at the left guard position for the Blue Hose and helped the offense churn 191 yards on the ground against the Chanticleers.
