Week two of the college football season wrapped up on Saturday night and there are some 18 players from the area making strides for their respective universities and colleges. Five of those student-athletes saw playing time over the weekend.
Junior transfer Terry Caldwell (Hoggard) made two tackles for No. 14 Ole Miss in a 73-21 rout over Fresno State.
True freshman Keevin Thompson (Hoggard) made seven carries for 11 yards for North Carolina A&T as the Aggies fell 53-14 to the North Carolina Tar Heels. Classmate Julius Reynolds (Hoggard) also made one tackle in the setback.
Catawba College quarterback Mike Sheehan (Laney) went 12-of-24 through the air for 168 yards, added 38 yards on the ground and accounted for two touchdowns. Catawba improved to 1-1 following a 35-21 win over Davidson.
With the game tied at seven late in the first quarter, the Indians put up 18 consecutive points as Sheehan made a one yard run past the goal line for the score. He also threw a 49 yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to give Catawba a 28-14 lead.
Ian Bergman (Laney) made one assist on a tackle for Wingate in a 30-16 victory over Shaw.
