The Score: Laney scores late in win over S. Brunswick; Topsails blanks Ashley

With the game tied late in the fourth quarter, Imeek Watkins raced into the end zone for his third touchdown of the game to lift Laney past South Brunswick 28-21 on Friday night.

Watkins put the Bucs on the board with 3:45 in the first quarter on a 5-yard run and Jamius Beckett made it 14-0 late in the opening stanza.

The Cougars battled back on a Cole Blackburn 1-yard touchdown run and got within one with 23 seconds left in the first half when Josh Carter scored from 11 yards out, but the point after attempt was missed.

Watkins answered the call for Laney with a 10-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter and the Cougars tied it at 21-all with under four minutes to go in the game on a 64 yard run and score by Blackburn.

Ryan Dabowoski had two sacks to lead the Bucs defense and for the second straight game Watkins rushed for over 200 yards. The junior running back scored the game-winner on a 10-yard run with 2:03 to play in the ballgame.

Laney moved to 2-0 in conference and got back to the .500 mark at 3-3 overall. The Bucs travel to Hampstead for a date with Topsail on Friday. Oct. 10. South Brunswick (1-1, 3-4) entertains West Brunswick on Friday, Oct. 10.

Topsail snapped a three-game skid with a 13-0 win over Ashley to spoil the Screaming Eagles’ homecoming night on Friday.

Nick Atilio put the Pirates on the board on the final play before halftime and Josh Jessup added the insurance score with a 32-yard trip to the end zone of the first play from scrimmage to start the fourth quarter.

Atilio also had an interception on defense for Topsail, while D.C. Russ picked off a pass for Ashley.

The Screaming Eagles built some momentum and sustained its first decent drive early in the third quarter, but a 1st and 10 from the Pirates’ 25-yard line turned into a fourth a long until Ashley used a fake punt to move the chains. The first down midway through the third frame was its first since the first play from scrimmage.

Topsail evened its conference record at 1-1 and moved to 3-4 overall. The Pirates host Laney on homecoming night in Hampstead on Friday, Oct. 10. Ashley (0-2, 0-6) is still in search of its first win heading into a road game against New Hanover at Legion Stadium.
