Reggae, funk, hip-hop: 3 concert announcements

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Three concerts have been announced at two local venues and tickets go on sale this week.

Lake Street Dive, mike. and Ziggy Marley and Burning Spear will perform in Wilmington this spring and fall. Tickets will go live for the general public for all three shows this Friday, Feb. 28.

Below is the rundown:

Lake Street Dive

The soulful blend of jazz, pop and funk come together in Lake Street Dive’s repertoire, keeping audiences dancing and crowds singing. The band has performed quite a few times at Wilmington’s Greenfield Lake and three years ago at Live Oak Bank Pavilion. They’re returning to the Riverfront Park amphitheater on Sept. 30.

The group has released eight albums to date, including 2024’s “Good Together,” following their 2021 release “Obviously,” which had the track “Hypotheticals” chart number two on the United States AAA.

Ziggy Marley and Burning Spear

Performing this fall at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College, Ziggy Marley will perform with reggae icon Burning Spear. The show is planned for Friday, Sept. 19.

Marley — son of reggae godfather Bob, and an eight-time Grammy Award winner, Emmy winner, musician, producer, activist and humanitarian in his own right — blends multiple genres into reggae, including funk, blues, and rock. The storyteller and performer’s music covers environmental awareness, self-empowerment, and social injustice, backed by messages of love.

He’s touring with Winston Rodney, a.k.a. Burning Spear.

He started a career in music after a encountering Bob Marley in he 1960s, Burning Spear has been nominated for 12 Grammys but won two for Best Reggae Album. An anti-racism activist and philanthropist, he was awarded the Jamaican government’s Order of Distinction for outstanding services to music and has established his own label.

Tickets go on sale to Wilson Center members at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, but to the general public at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 at WilsonCenterTickets.com. They’re also on sale at the box office by calling (910) 362-7000 from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

American platinum hip-hop and rap artist mike. is bringing his Upside Down Tour Pt. 2 to Wilmington, after playing a handful of festivals this spring. He’s stopping by on May 25.
