CAROLINA BEACH — A $15,000 boost from the North Carolina Arts Council is going to a local elementary school that will bring some color to one of its entrances.
Carolina Beach Elementary School received $15,000 to fund a student-created mural and transform the Clarendon Avenue entrance of the school into an aquarium tunnel.
Local mural artist Lauren Stumberg is taking the reins on the project but will work alongside art teacher Melony Connor and CBES students to complete the school-wide project, titled “Seascape.” Brightly colored and featuring marine life and nature patterns, it will take up roughly 930 square feet, including two walls and a ceiling.
Students will work on it during art classes — each class grade assigned various elements, from sea stars to fish. There also will be mixed media included, such as clay designs bringing texture and trash turned into print making designs.
Strumburg is a muralist, painter, and sculptor, who also is on the board of the Island Arts Council and has a child who attends CBES.
The plan is to unveil the artwork in March.
The $15,000 grant requires a $7,500 match, with $1,000 committed by the Island Arts Council, $1,000 by the Island Women, and donations by local businesses and parents.
