WILMINGTON — The weather was right, the seats were filled and the energy was undeniable as rock band Gov’t Mule made a two-night appearance last week at Wilmington’s Greenfield Lake Amphitheater.

Founding member Warren Haynes told Port City Daily last week the venue hits all the criteria for him, complete with a fun crowd.
Comprising legendary guitarist Warren Haynes (guitar, lead vocals), Matt Abts (Drums), Danny Louis (keyboard, guitar, backing vocals) and new bassist Kevin Scott, the Mule’s first show Tuesday featured a range of tracks.
The band opened the evening with “Traveling Tune,” off the 2017 album “Revolution Come… Revolution Go.” While easing into the set list at first, Gov’t Mule then turned up the heat with “Slackjaw Jezebel.”
New tracks off “Peace… Like a River” were played in the first set, with two covers kicking off the second: Pick Floyd’s “Fearless” and The Allman Brothers’ “Dreams.”
Gov’t Mule was formed in 1994 by Haynes and former Allman Brothers bassist, the late Allen Woody. Andy Hess replaced Woody in 2003, followed by Jorgen Carlsson in 2008.
This summer, Carlsson decided to part ways with The Mule after 15 years. The band announced Kevin Scott would fill in for the remainder of the summer tour. Touring in the past with Wayne Krantz, Jimmy Herring and Col. Bruce Hampton, Scott did not disappoint this past week. His energy was palpable.
Tom Dorgan with MoonFrog Media captured the evening in photos. He said Tuesday’s performance was “everything you want in a Mule show.”
