WILMINGTON — Just two days after a tragic mid-day shooting took the life of Shawn Levern Grady, authorities have made an arrest.
Grady was shot twice in the stomach on Monday, May 18. Grady was taken to the hospital but passed away from his injuries, leading to a public outcry. Grady was celebrated for throwing community parties and his shoe-drive, gathering footwear for those in need.
On Wednesday, the Wilmington Police Department arrested Andre Devaughn Huckabee, 43, and charged him with First Degree Murder for the shooting death of Grady. According to WPD, Huckabee was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20. No bond information is available yet.
Huckabee was arrested on the 500 block of Meares Street, according to WPD — that’s the same location, 519 Meares St., where he was arrested last month for misdemeanor assault of a female and violating a domestic violence protective order. Huckabee is due in New Hanover County court on those charges in early June.
Huckabee is also a convicted sex offender, according to North Carolina records.
In 2004, he was convicted of a 2001 felony offense against a 15-year-old victim (Huckabee was 25 at the time), in Connecticut under that state’s “risk of injuries” laws; specifically, Huckabee was convicted under the statute against having “contact with the intimate parts, as defined in section 53a-65, of a child under the age of sixteen years or subjects a child under sixteen years of age to contact with the intimate parts of such person, in a sexual and indecent manner likely to impair the health or morals of such child.”
Huckabee served four years in prison followed by ten years of probation. He registered as a sex offender in North Carolina at an address on Racine Drive in October of last year.
