Tonight, historian Chance Hellmann is presenting “a lesson on local libations” with his presentation “Cheers to the Port City: A History of Beer and Brewing in Wilmington, N.C.”

The event is being hosted at Waterline Brewing Co. from 6:30-8 p.m. $1 of every beer served will go toward community programs at Bellamy Mansion Museum. For those who might come hungry, Vittle’s food truck will be on scene.

Hellman, a Wilmington resident, is the collections manager for the Onslow County Museum. He is also an avid homebrewer who has made it a hobby to explore the area’s history as it relates to alcoholic beverages, and the places they are made and consumed.

“His research interests include brewing, distilling, wine making, taverns and inns, and the social history that surrounds them,” a press release about the event states.

Thursday night’s discussion will focus on early beer consumption in the South.

“As the colonies matured and eventually became the United States, both the places from where people acquired their beer and the types of beer they consumed changed,” the release states.
