WILMINGTON — There’s a new place in town to cool down after a hot day, Mel’s Ice Cream Shop in Monkey Junction is now open for business.
Mel’s is family owned and operated and owes its moniker to Melissa Lewkowicz. The Lewkowiczs moved to the area in 2015 from New York. Owning an ice cream shop had been an idea for some time — now it is a reality.
“We were just looking for a business to open up, and we had looked at restaurants and other things, but one of our favorite things to do as a family is to go get ice cream. We were driving all over the place to get ice cream and we said, ‘that’s it!’ I had a dream two years ago to open an ice cream shop … and now it kind of came to fruition,” Lewkowicz said.
The storefront has been totally renovated. 100 percent of the work was done by Lewkowicz’s along with the help of a few friends.
Mel’s will offer around 30 different flavors of ice cream, along with milkshakes, and house specialty served on Sundaes.
“We have about 30 flavors of different ice creams, we offer shakes, and over-the-top Sundaes. One of our big ones is the unicorn sunday, which has cotton candy and a bunch of other stuff on it,” Lewkowicz said.
Mel’s had a soft opening last week, and held its grand opening Saturday. Mel’s is located at 5310 Carolina Beach Road.
