Some schools reopening in the Cape Fear region

Some area schools are reopening, while others remain closed, after Hurricane Matthew forced all Cape Fear-area schools to close two days.

New Hanover County Schools — The school system is operating on a regular schedule Tuesday, Oct. 11, for students and staff.

“We are aware that some homes are still without power. If parents need to keep their students at home due to storm-related hardships, the district will excuse tomorrow’s absence,” Valita S. Quattlebaum, New Hanover County Schools spokeswoman, said.

The school district spent Monday assessing damage, removing debris and ensuring that all school facilities were functioning properly. The Child Nutrition Department will serve breakfast and lunch on Tuesday.

The school system’s transportation department is currently able to access nearly all neighborhoods throughout the county, Quattelbaum said. In the areas where buses cannot get through, transportation staff will contact the families to make alternative pick-up arrangements.

Brunswick County Schools — The school district will remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Pender County Schools — Schools will be closed for students and non-emergency staff on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
