WILMINGTON — Samuel “Sammy” Henderson Lee, a beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Wilmington, North Carolina, on May 2, 2025, at the age of 66, after a short battle with bladder cancer. Born in Wilmington on April 17, 1959, Sammy spent his life deeply rooted in the community he loved.
Raised in the heart of Wilmington, Sammy was known for his dedication to hard work and his passion for carpentry and mechanics. As a skilled carpenter, he took pride in building homes, including his own, that would stand the test of time. Later, he turned his talents to becoming a transmission mechanic, always eager to lend a hand to family and friends in need of car repairs. Sammy was truly a “car guy” at heart, finding joy in fixing up old vehicles and sharing his love for cars with those around him.
Aside from his work, Sammy cherished moments spent fishing, where the peaceful waters provided solace and reflection. His easygoing nature and generous spirit were evident in every aspect of his life.
Sammy was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Lee, and his sister, Betty Sue Hood. He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Shirley W. Lee; his loving mother, Margaret Gillespie; his brother, Larry (Laurie) Lee; his sister Maria Gillespie; and his cherished nieces and nephews: Kayla, Kristen, Steven, Tony, Jamie, Chloe, Alexandria and Amelia. Sammy also leaves behind many cousins and countless friends who will miss his warmth and kindness dearly.
A graveside service to honor Sammy’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, located at 1311 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, NC 28412. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate the life of a man whose legacy of love and craftsmanship will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, because of his love of animals, please consider donating, in his memory, to the New Hanover Humane Society.
