OAK ISLAND — Lawrence Byerly Driver, 68, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

He was born July 7, 1956 to Lawrence and Polly Driver in Salisbury, NC.

“Driver” attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History. During his college years he found Long Beach, North Carolina, lifeguarding during the summers, after college working on the Bald Head One Ferry. Driver made Oak Island his home.

He loved hunting and fishing and was known as “The Flounder Whisperer”. He was a charter fishing boat captain and a life time member of the Oak Island Elks Lodge.

He owned and operated The Gallery at Long Beach where he was known and loved as the best bartender on the beach. He had a sharp wit, always quick with a joke and a wonderful sense of humor.

Driver is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Laurie Caddell Driver.

He will be remembered with a smile and greatly missed.

A service and celebration of his life will be held at the Oak Island Elks Lodge at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
