Gearold O’Neal Batson (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

HAMPSTEAD — Gearold “Red” O’Neal Batson, 88, of Hampstead, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025. Born in Asheville on October 15, 1936, Gearold lived a life marked by dedicated military service, a strong work ethic, endless curiosity, and a profound love for his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Lillian Anita Batson (Crunk); his two children, Connie Jean Trossbach (George) and Harlee O’Neal “Neal” Batson; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, photographing the special moments that meant so much to him.

He enlisted in the military at 16 and proudly served his country in the United States Navy for more than 22 years. He was a Bronze Star recipient and Vietnam War veteran, and over his military career, he worked as a flight engineer and plane captain on several aircraft, including the C-54, C-121, and P-3.

After retiring from the Navy and earning a degree from Texas A & I University, Gearold and Anita began a new chapter in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Together, they opened a successful antique and used furniture store, A & G Furniture. Gearold also teamed up with his son Neal to start Batson Fisheries, a commercial fishing business that was as much about the excitement of the adventure as it was about the satisfaction of building something together with his son.

Gearold had a wide range of interests, including technology, genealogy, photography, fishing, and keeping up with current events. He had a love of learning and enjoyed problem-solving and having lively conversations with his friends, children, and grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his hard work, his love for his family, and his curious and innovative mind.

Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
