WILMINGTON — Sharon Katherine DeGroat, aged 80, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on July 21, 1944, in Nyack, New York, Sharon led a life marked by kindness, dedication, and an unwavering love for both her family and the natural world.

Sharon devoted four decades of her professional life to the telephone industry, beginning her career with NY Bell, which later evolved into Verizon. Her commitment and leadership were recognized throughout her tenure, culminating in her retirement as a respected Supervisor.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sharon was a woman of many passions. She held a deep love for the outdoors, with a special affinity for the beach and its serene beauty. An ardent admirer of wildlife, Sharon shared her home and heart with horses, dogs, and cats, each bringing boundless joy to her life. Among her beloved companions was Lucy, her cherished fur baby. A true sports enthusiast, she was a devoted fan of Duke basketball.

After moving to Pinehurst, NC, Sharon indulged her love for horses before eventually making her home in Wilmington. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life; as a devout Catholic, she was deeply devoted to St. Jude and passionately supported St. Jude Children’s Hospital as a Partner in Hope. Sharon’s generosity extended beyond her family and friends, as she held a profound concern for global warming and its impact on the world.

Sharon was preceded in death by her loving parents, William and Helen DeGroat, and her niece, Lisa DeGroat and her nephew-in-law, Lee Stout. She is survived by her brother, Brooke DeGroat, and his wife Linda; her nieces, Christine Stout and Stephanie Van Der Heide, along with her husband Matthew; her nephew, Michael DeGroat and his wife Sharon. She also leaves behind many cherished great-nieces and nephews and great great-nieces and nephews, who will carry on her legacy of warmth and compassion.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Nyack, NY, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember Sharon’s remarkable life. Sharon Katherine DeGroat will be remembered for her generosity, her devotion, and the profound impact she had on all who knew her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
