WILMINGTON — Riley James Merritt, a vibrant soul, devoted father, son, brother, and friend, passed away March 21, 2025, in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina. Born September 10, 2000, Riley lived a life full of love, laughter, and light inspiring everyone fortunate enough to know him. His joyful presence will be deeply missed.
Above all, Riley cherished time spent with his precious son, Jax, who was his pride and joy. Riley also treasured every moment with family and friends, having an uncanny ability to light up any room with his infectious smile and sense of humor. His compassion knew no bounds and his kindheartedness made everyone feel warmly welcomed.
Riley found joy in the simple pleasures in life and had a profound love of nature. Riley’s passion for music set the soundtrack for his adventurous spirit.
Riley is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Martin Zimmerman. He leaves to carry on his memory his son, Jaxon Thomas Merritt; his loving parents James Thomas Merritt and Catharine Zimmerman Merritt; his brothers, Joseph Graham “Gray” Merritt (girlfriend, Jordan Pipkin) and Gillon Christopher Merritt. He will also be dearly missed by his maternal grandmother Brenda Zimmerman Deal, and her husband, David Deal; paternal grandparents, Graham Eugene Merritt Sr. and Barbara Ann Merritt; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and an extended circle of friends who will continue to hold him close to their hearts.
