Richard Allen Teeter, 83

Richard Allen Teeter (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Richard Allen Teeter, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed veteran, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2025, in Wilmington, NC.

Richard was born on December 6,1941, in Canandaigua, NY. He lived a full and rewarding life of 83 years. Richard grew up in Palmyra, NY, where he graduated from Palmyra Macedon High School.

His life was marked by dedicated service and commitment, both to his country and his community. He served honorably as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years, exemplifying the values of duty, honor, and courage. Following his distinguished military career, Richard continued his service to others as the Director of Food Services for New Hanover County Schools, where he made a positive impact for 24 years.

In addition to his professional achievements, Richard was a man of varied interests and passions. A lifelong learner, he had an avid interest in history, spending countless hours reading and studying the past. He enjoyed sitting in his garage and watching it rain with his grandsons. One of his big passions was going to the Sawmill Restaurant to have breakfast with his friends. Above all, Richard cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.

Richard was a dedicated member and deacon of Myrtle Grove Baptist Church in Wilmington, where his faith and community involvement brought him great fulfillment.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Kelsey Eugene Teeter and Viola Mae Leenhouts Teeter, and his sister, Pamela Lee Bavis.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Joy D. Teeter. Richard and Joy began dating in 1997, but only after Richard agreed to attend church with Joy. She had an open yet “mandatory” invitation for him. After meeting that goal, Richard learned he must also refrain from smoking to continue their relationship. Fortunately, he was able to accomplish that goal as well. Appropriately so, Sunday School was next on the “to do” list. The rest is not just history… but is eternity! Richard’s relationship with our Lord & Savior began because of his relationship demands from Joy and her steadfast faith in her walk with God.

Richard is also survived by his children, David Teeter and wife Joyce, Cheryl Rhew and husband Steve, Ryan Cuthriell and wife Meredith, and Emily Robinson and husband Daniel; his brother Larry Eugene Teeter and wife Janet Marie, and sister Rebecca Ellen Gamba and husband Lawrence. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched deeply.

Richard Allen Teeter will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community. His legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him.
