WILMINGTON — Mildred Estelle Burke, a cherished resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, just three days shy of her 108th birthday. Born in the District of Columbia on March 15, 1917, she lived a life marked by intelligence, dedication, and generosity.

Throughout her impressive career, Mildred served the nation with distinction. She was recruited by a government department for her keen intellect and went on to become a highly respected employee at the Department of Defense. Her role assisting the general at the Pentagon with war games was vital, and her contributions to national security were invaluable. Her hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed, as she received many awards during her service, ultimately working until the age of 70.

Mildred possessed a deep love for animals, especially her beloved Nicki, with whom she shared numerous treats. Her compassion extended beyond her immediate circle, as she was known for her extreme generosity. She contributed to many charitable causes, including the ASPCA, making a positive impact on countless lives.

An avid reader with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Mildred enjoyed reading the Washington Post cover to cover. She was extremely insightful about government affairs, and her wisdom was admired by all who knew her. Mildred also had a passion for antiques, delighting in the discovery of special treasures.

Preceding her in death are her devoted parents, Margaret Ann Waugh and John Thomas Smith, as well as eight beloved siblings. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, who will remember her fondly. Mildred was especially close to her nephew Dennis Smith, whom she cared for and raised with love.

In addition to her professional achievements, Mildred was a loving caregiver to her mother, who lived with her for many years. Her kindness and selflessness were evident in every aspect of her life.

A memorial service to honor Mildred’s remarkable life will be held at a later date. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and wisdom that will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known her.
