WILMINGTON — It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, John Wayne Barnes, on March 11, 2025, at the age of 79. Wayne was deeply loved by anyone that he came into contact with and his presence will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Wayne was born in Wilmington, NC on June 9, 1945 to Gladys Blake Barnes and John E. Barnes, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children Suzanne Bourgeous & Banks Bourgeous, Chris Barnes & Tricia Barnes, Mia Clifford & Joseph Clifford & grandchildren Chad Barnes, Ethan Barnes, Aaron Barnes, Caleb Harston & Colin Harston, & sister Shirley Carrino. He will be mourned by his lifelong friend Valerie Prevatte Johnson.
A true world traveler, Wayne lived a life full of adventure and exploration. His journeys took him to far corners of the globe, where he immersed himself in new cultures, formed lasting connections, and built a rich tapestry of experiences that he cherished. His love for discovering the world was matched only by his independent spirit and curiosity.
He will be remembered not only for his travels but for his quiet strength, the lessons he imparted, and the legacy of courage and self-reliance he leaves behind. Though we grieve his passing, we celebrate the life he lived—a life of exploration, self-discovery, and love, in his own way. His memory will remain in our hearts forever.
