LELAND — Rich Reid of Leland, NC, originally from Buffalo, NY, has hung up his pickleball paddle for the last time, departing this world on March 8, 2025. Though we’re pretty sure he’d argue he’s just “off to a better court,” Rich leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and projects that may or may not have been completed.
Rich carved his professional niche as a Project Manager where he deftly maneuvered through the healthcare industry with the precision of a carpenter cutting dovetail joints—a skill he admired in his woodworking pursuits. His knack for managing projects was surpassed only by his ability to manage his time between reading, crafting woodwork, and enjoying the company of family and friends.
When Rich wasn’t indulging in his artistic side, he could be found rallying on the pickleball courts with his friends in Wilmington. He was known for his competitive spirit and, more importantly, for his post-game banter, which often carried the day regardless of the match outcome. He also cherished his time at the community center in Leland, where he held court with equal parts charm and wit.
Rich is survived by his beloved wife, Linda, whose patience and humor matched his own; his daughters Melissa Reid, Megan Itell, and Pamela Reid, who each inherited a piece of his adventurous spirit; and his grandchildren Andrew and Zachary, who will surely carry on his legacy of quick wit and warm hearts. His sisters, Glenna Gromada and Patricia Owen, along with six nieces, will miss his sage advice and occasional dad jokes. Rich joins his parents, Richard M. Reid and Helen Marie (Desmond) Reid, and his niece Jenny Gromada in the great beyond, no doubt already organizing celestial gatherings.
Despite his vast circle of friends and family, Rich preferred life’s quieter moments, choosing to keep his funeral services private. We imagine he’d want us to gather over a game of pickleball or around a perfectly crafted table, swapping stories and sharing laughs in his honor.
