Dr. Edward Doy Aycoth (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — Dr. Edward Doy Aycoth, born on June 9, 1942, in Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doy Ellis Aycoth and Ila Mae Owens Aycoth.

Edward excelled both academically and athletically at Harding High School, where he played football and baseball while serving as Student Body President. He pursued a degree in Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University before earning his medical degree from the University of North Carolina Medical School. He later completed his radiology residency at the University of South Carolina.

A proud veteran, Edward served as a Captain in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge, he dedicated his career to radiology, practicing for many years in the Princeton and Bluefield areas of West Virginia. He also served as President of Professional Imaging, Inc., contributing significantly to the medical community.

A loving and devoted husband, Edward was married to Shirley Jones Aycoth for 38 years. Together, they raised three sons: Kent Aycoth (Beth) of Fairmont, WV; Andrew Aycoth of Carolina Beach, NC; and J.V. Flanagan (Ashley) of Wilmington, NC. He was a devoted grandfather to Thaddeus and Calliope Aycoth, Addison Longwell, and Keegan Flanagan. He is also survived by his sisters Martha Miller of Mooresville, NC, and Olivia Jenkins (Dwain) of Clover, SC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A lifelong learner with a passion for history and comparative religion, Edward found joy in intellectual pursuits. He also enjoyed tennis, running, and cheering on college football teams.

Dr. Edward Doy Aycoth will be remembered for his dedication to his family, profession, and many interests. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
