OAK ISLAND — John H. Wensley, 65, of Oak Island, NC passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
He was born on July 31, 1959 to the late John W. and Dorothy (Merkel) Wensley, in Oceanside, NY where he spend his youth. He later moved to Freeport, NY where he raised his family and led a life of constant service, compassion and dedication to his community.
John served 23 years in the Freeport Police Department and 45+ years as a member of Wide Awake Engine Company #1 in the Freeport Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Chief. He was a first responder to the aftermath of the World Trade Center following the attacks on September 11, 2001.
Upon retiring from the police department, he moved to Clayton, NC where he worked as head of security for Johnston Medical Center. He retired from that role and moved to Oak Island to enjoy family and friends at the beach. He joined the Elks and continued to give back to his community.
John always focused on helping others. He loved being with his family and spending time with his Fire Department brothers and friends. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him and may God rest his soul.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in eternal life by his sister, Frances McClintock, and brother-in-laws, Patrick Drew and Brian Kilduff.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen Kilduff Wensley; three children, Lauren (Shawn Regan), Sean, and Kevin; sisters, Dorothy Drew, Carolyn (Vincent) Ingerson, Merilyn Merenda and Patricia (Thomas) Kane; brother-in-laws, Paul McClintock, James (Juliet) Kilduff, Michael Kilduff, Thomas (Kathleen) Kilduff, and John (Jennifer) Kilduff; a host of nieces, nephews & cousins.
A service will be held on Long Island at Hungerford & Clark Funeral Home in the town of Freeport on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM.
The family requests that donations or memorial contributions be made in John’s name to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and/or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
