George M. Laney, 88

George M. Laney (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

HAMPSTEAD — George M. Laney, age 88, of Hampstead went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 2, 2025, with his family by his side.

George was born in Bennettsville, SC on May 18, 1936, he was the son of the late Carroll W. and Margaret (Hobart) Laney. Along with his parents he was also predeceased in death by his late wife of many years, Bobby Odom Laney.

George grew up in Cheraw, S.C., where he played football in high school, and attended Clemson College. He was a huge Clemson fan with all his paraphernalia including hats, blankets, parking space sign, and more. If there was a game on you could bet George would be in front of the TV!

George was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He touched many lives with his love for trying to help young people excel to their full potential by using encouragement, wisdom, experience and most of the time, kindness. George was loved by so many. He was generous, almost to a fault. He loved family, chocolate, gardening, the ocean, cooking stews, grilling extra-large steaks fit for three people, hunting until he just wanted to watch the animals in nature. George loved to sit and watch the birds and the squirrels in he and Del-Rae’s little sanctuary, going to Madison’s Restaurant in Sneads Ferry where TJ and Len always had a hug and a table waiting. Singing was pretty much a daily occurrence in the household. Everything would remind him of a song, and he would start singing.

Working was not an option for George. He loved it his entire life until he could no longer use the Laney legs. Growing up he farmed anything from crops to hogs and chickens. He worked in the textile industry for many, many years and with Eastern Outfitters where he met many close friends. He served in the United States Navy and was a true patriot.

Surviving George, is his loving and faithful wife, Del-Rae Doppelheuer; sons, Mitchell Laney, of Watertown, TN, Dane Laney, of Weaverville, NC, and Titus Laney, of Apex, NC; step-children, Shellie Woodruff, of Richlands, NC Brian Woodruff of Los Angeles, CA, Eddie Woodruff of Odenten, MD, Hollie McCrary of Denver CO; his brother, Duncan Laney, of Cheraw, SC; his first wife, Claudia Guffy of Burnsville, NC; grandchildren, Owen and Jett Laney, of Watertown, TN and Ali Ann Laney, of Apex, NC; step-grandchildren, Olivia Leedham, of Naples, FL and Constance Leedham of Austin, TX; and step-great grandchildren, Kaden and Lailah; William Perry, his very dear friend of more 60 years and Caleb Price who was like a grandson to him.

George will be truly missed but never forgotten and always in our hearts.

A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel, 17730 Highway 17 N., Hampstead, NC 28443.
