LELAND — Christine Crosby Schneider, 84, of Leland, NC passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025.
Chris was born in Lake Como, MS to Charlie Crosby and Ada Ulmer on December 11, 1940. When she was nine years old, Chris moved with her family to Erie, Pa. Chris attended Academy High School where she lettered in basketball and track. Chris loved to sing and had a fine singing voice. She sang in her church choir and later with the Academy High School Chorus. In the mid to late 60s, Chris sang with several local R&B and Rock bands.
While living in Erie, Chris worked for the General Telephone Company, Erie Technological Products and the Post Office. In 1971, she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked as a micro photographer at the Library of Congress. She then began a rewarding career working for the Army Corps of Engineers. The first position she held was as a Civil Engineering Technician and program manager at the Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) at Ft Belvoir. This was followed by a six-year tour in Germany, working for HQ United States Army Europe and 7th Army. After her tour, Chris returned to Ft. Belvoir where she worked at the Topographic Engineering Center (TEC). There Chris supported TEC and other Army and Department of Defense customers who were engaged in topographic, geographic, hydrologic and related physical science studies until she retired in 2003.
Chris was smart and had a great personality, a keen sense of humor and a contagious laugh. Chris enjoyed traveling, both for work and pleasure, and doing word puzzles.
Chris is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Alex (Lex) Schneider. Chris is also survived by two loving daughters from a previous marriage, Benita Lynn Bozman and Paula Cherise Brower; and 14 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, a son Anthony Crosby, a daughter Michelle Graves, and her six siblings: Charlie (Junior) Crosby Jr., Samuel (Sam) Crosby; Mildred Darby; Hazel Thomas; Gertrude Crosby; and Wallace Crosby.
A service will be announced by the family at a later date.
