WILMINGTON — Robert Seger Dineen, Sr., affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside on January 9, 2025, in Wilmington, NC at Novant Health/New Hanover Regional Medical Center, just shy of his 78th birthday.
Born on January 25, 1947, in Rochester, NY, Bob lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Raised in a Navy family, Bob experienced the wonders of the country from an early age, setting roots in various places before graduating in 1964 from Camp Lejeune High School. His journey of self-discovery took him first to East Carolina University (ECU), but he ultimately found his academic home at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), where he completed his studies.
In 1966, Bob answered the call of duty, serving his country with honor in the U.S. Navy until 1972. Armed with a wealth of experiences and a steadfast spirit, he transitioned into civilian life by joining the Wilmington Fire Department in the mid-70s, where he demonstrated valor and dedication to his community.
Bob’s true calling emerged when he embarked on a new career with Georgia Pacific, where he excelled in outside sales until his retirement in 2000. Traveling across the Southeast, Bob sold lumber with passion, forging countless friendships along the way. Even after retiring, his love for work led him to Lowes Lumber and later Godwin Lumber, where he remained until his health, unfortunately, began to decline.
When not working, Bob was often found embracing the great outdoors. An avid hunter, he eagerly anticipated and never missed the opening day of dove season each year. He shared many of these adventures with his best friend, Jim Evans, whether hunting or casting lines on fishing trips. Bob also had a penchant for golf and spent joyful afternoons playing softball, cherishing the camaraderie of his leagues.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. James R. and Dorothy Dineen (née Seger), his brother Michael Dineen, and sister-in-laws Gail Dineen and Debra “Debbie” Dineen. He is survived by his loving wife Martha Dineen, his cherished children Robert “Bobby” S. Dineen, Jr. and Sharon Dineen, and his devoted siblings David Dineen, Dr. Jeffrey Dineen (Donna), Kevin Dineen (Peg), Mary Jo Rhodes, and Brian Dineen (Marci). He also leaves behind his stepmother Emma Dineen, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will dearly miss his presence.
Bob will be remembered not only for his dedication and hard work but also for his quick wit and unparalleled sense of humor. He never missed a chance to share a good joke, bringing smiles and laughter to those around him. Bob’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him, continuing to inspire, uplift, and bring joy.
The family will receive visitors at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation – Wilmington Chapel – on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, starting at 5:00pm with a Memorial Service to honor Bob’s life and legacy to begin at 6:00pm officiated by Pastor Brad McDowell and music by Duke and Amanda Ladd.
