WILMINGTON — Lois H. O’Brien, 82, formerly of Oyster Bay, NY, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on April 20, 1942, in Far Rockaway, NY to the late Lawrence and Dorothy Hochschwender.
Lois is survived by her husband of 57 years Michael O’Brien; her children Dorothy van Gerbig, Hilary (Ian) McDonald, Michael (Christina) O’Brien; siblings Dede Shannon and Biff Hochschwender; and grandchildren George, Oliver, and Samantha McDonald and Margot, Ellie, and Charlotte O’Brien.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who cherished family above all else. She had a magnetic smile and sunny open personality which drew people to her. She was quick to make new friends wherever she went, and she developed deep relationships that spanned her lifetime.
Lois had an extraordinary creative flair. She was an accomplished interior designer with an eye for detail and a love for design. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of all kinds of music, especially showtunes. She loved crafts in her free time, especially knitting, and created beautiful pieces that were cherished by friends and family.
She was a passionate bridge player and tennis and golf enthusiast. Lois also spent countless hours at the beach soaking in the sun she loved so much.
Lois will be remembered for her generous spirit, infectious laughter, and the love she extended to everyone around her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and location.
In lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in appreciation of the compassionate care provided to Lois in her final days.
Lois’ memory will live in the hearts of her family and friends and she will forever be an inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to know her.
