WILMINGTON — Barbara Seaberg Hopper passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 93. Born in Los Angeles, California, Barbara’s life was a testament to creativity, love, and service to others.
Barbara’s early years in Tenafly laid the foundation for a lifetime of diverse pursuits. A cheerleader and fashion model, she also discovered her love for the arts through her first art lessons. Her academic journey led her to Duke University, where she graduated with a degree in education. During her time at Duke, she was a Pi Beta Phi, sang in the choir, graced the campus theatre, and was honored as homecoming queen. Barbara exemplified leadership and creativity, becoming a cherished member of Duke’s distinguished leadership society.
Her adventurous spirit found a partner in Dick, whom she met on a blind date at a football game. Their marriage, spanning an extraordinary seventy-one years, began with a whirlwind journey across California, Hawaii, and back to Tenafly. Barbara taught first grade while Dick served overseas in the Marine Corps, embodying resilience and adaptability.
Settling in Naperville, Illinois, Barbara devoted her life to teaching elementary school and special education—a calling that demanded and honed her considerable skills. Her impact on the lives of countless students remains immeasurable. Alongside her professional endeavors, Barbara nurtured her passion for art, leaving behind a legacy of paintings, murals, screens, and ceramic works cherished in homes throughout Landfall and beyond.
In 1990, Barbara and Dick moved to Wilmington, NC, where she embraced new chapters as a master gardener and traveler, exploring the US and the world. She studied painting in Italy, enriching her artistic repertoire and inspiring those around her. As an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, she gave generously of her time and talents, serving on numerous committees in art and gardening, and contributing to college boards.
Barbara’s love for nature, animals, and family was matched only by her devotion to nurturing relationships and community. Though Alzheimer’s Disease marked her final years, her spirit and kindness shone brightly. Barbara will be profoundly missed by all who knew her, whose lives were illuminated by her friendship and artistry.
Barbara Seaberg Hopper’s life was a masterpiece, painted with vibrant colors of love, dedication, and grace. Her legacy endures in the hearts of those she touched, reminding us of all of the beauty found in a life well-lived.
