Mary Nicole “Nicki” Hankovich Johnson, a beacon of strength and warmth, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on January 10, 2025, in her beloved hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on May 2, 1984, Nicki graced the world with 40 vibrant years of life.
Nicki’s life was a testament to resilience and devotion. Raised in Wilmington, she cultivated a deep passion for helping others, leading her to earn an Associate’s Degree as a Certified Medical Assistant from Miller-Motte College. Nicki had always wanted to work with children in the medical field. Her compassionate spirit found a home at New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Nunalee Pediatric Clinic where she served with distinction and care as a Certified Medical Assistant, until becoming permanently disabled from a host of autoimmune diseases.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Nicki’s life was filled with love and enthusiasm. She found immeasurable joy in cooking savory meals, exploring new places through travel, and cherishing quality moments with her family.
Despite facing the relentless challenges of Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nicki’s indomitable spirit and infectious smile never faltered. She embodied courage and grace, proving herself a true warrior until the very end.
Nicki is survived by her loving parents, Donna Prim Hankovich and George “Corky” Hankovich; her cherished son, Christopher Johnson, who was the light of her life; her fiancé, Christopher Wills, of the home; and her beloved pets, “Maggie Mae” and “Oscar.” Each held a special place in her heart and were fortunate recipients of her boundless affection.
In honor of Nicki’s extraordinary life, a celebration will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation or the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation, continuing her legacy of strength and support for those in need.

As we bid farewell to Nicki, may we carry forward her legacy of compassion, and fight, remembering her as the inspiration she truly was.
