WILMINGTON — John Peter Kilelee Jr., known fondly as “Pete,” passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at the age of 76.

Born on December 12, 1948, in Newark, New Jersey, Pete was a long-time resident of Livingston, NJ, before relocating to Wilmington, NC. He graduated from Livingston High School and went on to build a successful life, first as the proud owner of a manufacturing company, Kapco, and later as a devoted family man.

Pete was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it was always meaningful. His dry wit and infectious laugh will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a loving partner, father, grandfather, and friend, who valued his family above all else. After his retirement, Pete found joy in spending time with his beloved grandchildren, often offering a helping hand to care for them, as he did for his own children.

He is survived by his partner of 18 years, Margaret Peterson; children Erin Allen (Anthony), Shannon Kilelee Vazquez, Joanne Butler (Richard), and Peter Kilelee (Christina); and 10 beloved grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and John Kilelee Sr.

In his free time, Pete was a skilled carpenter who found great satisfaction in working with his hands. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of his children, coaching their softball teams and cheering them on from the sidelines. A lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, he never missed an opportunity to catch a game.

A man who took great pride in being a provider for his family, Pete was the rock on which they built their lives. Though he often kept to himself, his actions spoke volumes, and his love and dedication will never be forgotten.

A private service will be held to honor Pete’s life, with family and close friends gathering to share memories and celebrate his legacy. The celebration will be held at the Cypress Island Clubhouse at 2:00 in the afternoon on January 19th.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation in Pete’s memory.

Pete’s impact on those who loved him will last forever, and he will always be remembered as a man who truly lived life with purpose.
