WILMINGTON — Gloria Harrington O’Connor, age 99, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 26, 2024, in Wilmington, NC, after celebrating her 100th Christmas surrounded by love.
Born on November 18, 1925, in Brooklyn, NY, Gloria was the cherished daughter of James Harrington and Frances Gaffney Harrington of Stamford, CT. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas O’Connor, her brother Jim Harrington, and her sister Joan Gillespie.
Gloria was a proud 1943 graduate of Stamford High School and earned her nursing degree from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. Her dedication to helping others was evident throughout her career, as she worked in hospitals across the United States while supporting her husband’s military service in the U.S. Army.
A devoted mother, Gloria leaves behind her four children: Patricia, Barbara, Thomas, and Paul. Her legacy lives on through her eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.
In retirement, Gloria embraced life to the fullest. She loved traveling the world, playing golf, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also deeply committed to her faith, volunteering for cancer fundraisers and actively participating in her local Catholic churches.
Gloria’s kindness, resilience, and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization dear to Gloria’s heart.
A memorial service honoring the remarkable woman who enriched so many lives will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 starting at 1:00 PM at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation Chapel located at 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403.
