OAK ISLAND — Alphonse Anthony Casella, Sr., aged 88, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at his home in Oak Island, NC. Born on April 3, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, Alphonse lived a life marked by service, dedication, and deep love for his family and community.
Alphonse proudly served his country as a member of the US Army’s 11th Airborne Division, stationed in Germany as part of the peacekeeping forces following World War II. His commitment to duty and love for his country were constants throughout his life. The 11th Airborne Division deployed to Germany early in 1956, then deactivated on August 1, 1958. It reactivated at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on February 1, 1963, and became the 11th Air Assault Division (Test), to develop and refine air assault tactics and equipment for a new helicopter-borne Army. On completion of that mission, the 11th Air Assault Division was inactivated on June 29, 1965. Alphonse received both his Airborne wings and Assault badge for his service.
After his military service, Alphonse built a successful career in sales. His job moved him and his family from Philadelphia to Charlotte, NC around 1970. In 1984 after the death of his wife in 1981, Alphonse moved to Oak Island, NC and began a career at the Shalotte Walmart, where his skill and dedication earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike. His professional journey was characterized by integrity and a tireless work ethic, hallmarks of his character that he carried into every aspect of his life. Ultimately, he would transfer to the Southport Walmart after their opening and subsequently retire.
A passionate bowler, Alphonse spent countless joyful hours at the lanes, sharing his love for the sport with friends and family. His competitive spirit and camaraderie brought people together, creating lasting memories and friendships.
Alphonse was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, where he attended Mass every Sunday. His faith was a guiding light in his life, providing strength and comfort to him and those around him.
Above all, Alphonse was a loving father and good provider, cherishing his role within his family. He is survived by his children: Virginia Casella-Epps of Oak Island, Alphonse Casella, Jr of Charlotte, NC, and Michael Casella of Indian Trail, NC. He leaves behind a legacy through his cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Caitlin, Elizabeth, Miranda, and Cameron, as well as five great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Casella.
Alphonse is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Theresa, who passed away in 1981, his daughter, Theresa Mary Staggs in 2011, and his brother, Joseph Casella as well as his parents, Joseph and Rose (nee Corsendino) Casella. Though their absence is deeply felt, their spirits remain alive in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
Alphonse Anthony Casella, Sr. will be remembered as a man of unwavering principles, enduring love, and an indomitable spirit. His life serves as an inspiration to all who knew him, leaving a legacy of kindness, resilience, and devotion. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. No services are planned at this time.
